DIY Jewelry Storage

I finally, FINALLY crossed “jewelry storage” off my bedroom to-do list. For a while I was planning to display all my necklaces but I realized two things: 1- Having all my necklaces on display (I have a lot) would look too busy and take away from the “calm retreat” vibe I was going for. 2. Having necklaces on display, would require dusting them and that is just not cool.

I needed hidden jewelry storage.  Something I would know was there but no one else (my daughter in particular)would know about. I couldn’t find anything I liked so I decided to DIY my own jewelry storage.

The pros of hidden jewelry storage far out weigh the cons: My necklaces would be both hidden and organized

No extra cleaning

Convenient access to all my necklaces at once

Harder for burglars to find

My daughter wont be able to find them- for a little while at least

Originally, I asked Big Daddy to build me a framed box that would attach to the wall. I realized that I was making the project more complicated than it needed to be. In the end, I decided to mount a canvas to the wall using a piano hinge. It was super easy and super quick.

Supplies: canvas in your desired size

piano hinge

screws

cup hooks

drill

measuring tape

level

This is what the back of your canvas should look like. The wood frame is the perfect depth to accommodate cup hooks and necklaces.

Determine which way you want your canvas to open. Attach the hinge to the canvas.

Using a measuring tape, determine where you want the canvas to go. Make sure the canvas is level and attach the canvas to the wall.

Once the canvas is attached to the wall, it should open and close easily. Next, you would add the cup hooks.

Before I got rid of the giant oak jewelry armoire, I removed the necklace holders (and anything else I thought I could reuse) for another project. They happened to fit perfectly behind the canvas so I made an executive decision and used them instead of cup hooks. I staggered the rows so that I could fit as many necklaces as possible without them getting tangled.

Now, back to the cup hooks. As long as you don’t mind a bunch of tiny holes in your wall, you could screw them directly into the wall. Your other option is to screw the cup hooks into thin strips of wood like lattice or shims. Then you would attach the strips of wood with a screw on each end.

If you live in a rental, you could try Command Hooks and avoid holes in your walls altogether.
