Have you heard of Naked cakes? Basically it is a layer cake with no outer icing. Simple and chic, naked cakes are the perfect example of ” sometimes less is more”. I have been a fan of naked cakes since I first laid eyes on them.
This Summer I made a birthday cake for my sister and finally got to try my hand at a Naked Cake. I baked a chocolate cake with white icing- her favorite. It is also the most challenging to ice because chocolate crumbs stick out like a sore thumb. With a Naked cake, crumbs are allowed, they add to the cakes rustic charm.
I baked two round cakes, filling the cake with white icing and swirled giant rosettes on the top. I think the cake took all of 15 minutes to ice.
It looks a little like a fancy Suzy Q and it was pretty tasty too. We didn’t miss the outside icing at all.
Now that I have made my first naked cake, I don’t think I will ever go back to a traditional cake. Unless of course the birthday person requests it, but I hope they don’t.
