Exterior Reveal

I finally got all my ducks in a row and can share our exterior reveal with you. By “all my ducks in a row” I mean I found the file where I put all the pictures of the exterior repairs we made on our house. When we bought our house, we knew we would have to make major repairs down the road. The roof was at the end of its second layer so that would be a complete tear off and $$. The gutters leaked and when it rained, it sounded like a waterfall was outside our back windows. The light gray aluminum siding had faded to pale blue. The siding looked fine from the street but when you got up close, you could see all the dents and dings from the people next door’s giant oak tree. We put up with the leaking gutters, old roof (which never leaked) and siding until a year and a half ago when I had a face to face encounter with two squirrels IN our attic! I survived physically unscathed and the squirrels were relocated to another county on the other side of a lake.

We found a contractor we liked and work started last August. He called one night and told us he would be starting the following morning. Thankfully, my sister reminded me to take before pictures. I was outside at 7am taking pictures with my phone.

I saved the old windows from the attic and a couple of pieces of the original siding. The contractor saved the sidelights and transom windows around the front door for me. I say me because Big Daddy was just like “Why?” Oh, and I also saved all the old outdoor light fixtures “to sell” a.k.a. “to make something with”. You understand right? By the way, the original siding was a pretty shade of green. Remember that as you scroll down to the “after” pictures.

DURING:

The roof was replaced the day before we left for vacation and I did see a few pieces of siding go up but other than that, most of the work happened while we were away. The contractor was supposed to send a bunch of pics everyday. Turns out his idea of a bunch (2/wk) and my idea of a bunch were very different.

Thankfully our friends and family were more than happy to send progress pics everyday!

We made some cosmetic changes to the front of the house by adding an apron and made the portico larger. We love how it turned out.

AFTER:

The only thing left to do on the house was pick a color for the front door. The contractor pushed hard for a white door- white. I was like “Do you not know me by now? I think the door has been two colors since we met you.” For the record, there is nothing wrong with a white door. It just wasn’t for us.

Remember the basket planters that I stained? Now you can see how the original color was just wrong with the siding color.

This is the driveway side entrance. We love the wood door with the siding. It is very worn and faded but still in good shape. I am going to stain it this fall. Hopefully a coat of stain will bring it back to life. If not, I found a new door to paint. Either way I win but I really hope the stain does the trick.

I painted the back door and added this adorable bicycle planter. The door looks purple in the picture but it is a really pretty gray color. When I finally picked the paint color, I tried it out on this back door first. The front door has way to many windows to paint if I didn’t like the color.

The screen door is back. It is just simple and old school. You can read about our screen door installation here.

After looking at a million paint colors and buying a quart of paint we ended up not using. We found the perfect color for the front door. The kicker is it was the first paint chip I picked out when I started looking. I should’ve went with my gut in the first place. Big Daddy was 100% involved in choosing the paint color for the front door. We went through the paint decks, narrowed down the colors, and picked our favorites. It was very diplomatic.

I love, love, love the color.

Isn’t the hardware pretty?

We kept our old mailbox and I just spray painted it black. After looking everywhere for a round, black doorbell and having no luck, I bought a brass one and spray painted it black.

We love the exterior updates. What do you think? Now we just have to tackle the landscaping.

  1. Love it! So nice to revisit the “old” (before) to see how much has changed. It looks amazing now. Such a challenging process but you can really see the benefit of the thoughtful effort you put into it. I’m not sure I have that kind of patience. Enjoy it!

  2. wow! beautiful! and that bike planter is like nothing i’ve seen. enjoy your new space!
